Polyp Free!

Today I had an ultrasound to have my uterus checked for polyps.  In the past, I had this done prior to my IVFs because I've had multiple instances where it had returned.  In fact, last September, my FET at NEDC was cancelled because they found a polyp (which later my doctor said there were more than one) right before we were supposed to hope on a plane for our transfer.  I had a hysteroscopy and D&C  to have it removed in October.

Today, I went in again to have it checked because I didn't want a repeat of what happened in September.  I was actually quite nervous at the appointment, worried about what if the polyps had returned.  Then I would have to postpone my transfer again, and would have to deal the the medical bill of another hysteroscopy.  Thank God my scan came up clear of polyps.

However, during the scan, the technician found something interesting.  He thinks I may have a slight case of, or early onset of Adenomyosis.  It is a condition where the endometrial tissue that usually lines the uterus start growing into the muscles of the uterus.  This can cause the thickening of the uterine walls and can cause heavy or longer-than-usual periods as well as pain during period or sex.  I do not have any of these symptoms right now, and my gynecologist is not worried about it at this point.  He does not believe this will impact my ability to conceive or affect my transfer outcome.  So that is good to know.

So now that I got the all clear from polyps, I have the peace of mind for a true "go" for the May transfer protocol.  Now that that's out of the way, I finally booked our flights to Knoxville for our transfer.

I took my last birth control pill on Saturday and today, I started my period today, with the "perfect" timing of right before my ultrasound.  I found out my period started when I used the bathroom minutes before my appointment.  Tomorrow morning, I will have my baseline ultrasound and blood work appointment.  If all goes well I should be starting my Es.trace tablets on Friday.

Tomorrow I will also have my endometrial biopsy that was recommended by Dr. Keenan for patients doing their third attempts at NEDC.  The biopsy is not so much to do a pathology report, but is used more for "scratching" the lining of the uterus.  I guess there has been research to show that this can help with implantation.  I'm a little nervous since I've heard it can be very uncomfortable.  I won't be sedated but will take some pain killers prior to the procedure.

Tomorrow is going to be a busy day.

And So It Begins.... Again.

And so it begins.... again.

I started Lu.pron tonight.  I have been on birth control pills since March and will continue till Saturday night, but the Lu.pron shots officially (to me at least) marks the beginning of my protocol for my May transfer.

After talking over with Babe we have decided that we will stick with 2PNs as per NEDC's normal process for donors with both 2PNs and blastocysts.  Yesterday, Carol the embryologist called me after hearing that I had some concerns but I assured her that we have decided to stick with NEDC's usual process and go with the 2PNs.

According to Carol, they will thaw three 2PN embryos 2 days before our transfer, with the goal of having at least 2 of those will survive and grow into healthy multicells.  If all three are of great quality, they will only transfer two,  and will refreeze one for future use.  According to her, this is the best stage to refreeze embryos if needed.  She also said that 2PNs do very well at thaw and have pretty good pregnancy rates.  The pregnancy rate for 2PNs is the same as multicell and blastocysts.

The other thing Carol mentioned is Dr. Keenan tends to recommend patients going for their third try at NEDC to try embryos from a different stage than the previous attempts.  This is true as Dr. Keenan did suggest trying embryos that are not blasts this time around.  It just so happened that while looking at donor profiles, most of the donors that seemed right for us had blasts.  The family we selected just happened to also have 2PNs, so like I mentioned in my previous post, they were more of an afterthought.  But we have decided this is good thing, using 2PNs.  In the end, we are ending up to use embryos at a stage suggested by the doctor anyway.

One more thing that will be different for us this transfer.  Because we are using 2PNs, NEDC will have to do assisted hatching on the embryos, which at the time of transfer will be at the multicell stage.  There is an additional cost of $525, but that in the end, the cost is just another part of the process of working with embryos.

I have scheduled my 2 ultrasound and lab appointments for 4/24 and 5/12.  My endometrial biopsy is also scheduled on 4/24.  In addition, I have scheduled an ultrasound to check my uterine lining for polyps.  My gynecologist has suggested having the biopsy and ultrasound on the same day so I could save a trip to the doctor's office.  Unfortunately, the ultrasound tech is not in the office the day I need to have my biopsy, so I have to go in to the doctor's 2 days in a row.  My gynecologist wants to have the ultrasound done as close as possible to the biopsy so he has the most current results.  I also checked with my gynecologist if there are any other testing that can be done for recurring chemical pregnancies and he said no.  Dr. Keenan said the same thing, so I will let that rest.

So right now, all my appointments are scheduled, my calendars are updated with appointment and reminders to take my medication on my phone.  I just have to remember to do my shots and take my meds.

Next up, I need to book our flights, hotel and car rental.

One Week To Transfer!

My transfer is in exactly one week.  We hop on the plane (hopefully) on Sunday, pending my ultrasound and estradiol appointment on Thursday.  My lining will need to be at at least 7 mm for this to be a go a planned.  If all is well, our transfer is on Tuesday the 21st.

Truth be told, I'm a little nervous.  Though my appointment for my last transfer in November went fine (my lining was 9 mm), I'm a little nervous that it may be thin like it was for my originally planned September transfer when it was only 6.3 mm.  It was supposed to be delayed a couple of days but in the end was cancelled when we found out I had a polyp that needed to be removed first.  So, I'm praying that my lining will be at least 7 mm, so we would not be delayed.  To help it along, I have been going in for weekly acupuncture sessions, though I will have 2 this week.  I have also been eating fresh raspberries and putting a hot pad over my uterus to help with blood flow to the lining, as per my acupucturist.  If all goes well, I should start my PIO (progesterone in oil) shots on Friday.

On another note, I had an appointment with my doctor to follow-up on my blood pressure concern.  At my hysteroscopy to remove my polyp, they found that my blood pressure was really high.  I went to see my doctor and we discussed that we would monitor my blood pressure at home for a couple of months, increase my activity levels, lower my salt intake and eat more fruits and veggies.  Well my blood pressure was still slightly elevated.  I have to admit, I have not been good at eating a low sodium diet with all the holidays and traveling.  Nor have I been exercising much with my butt being sore during PIO shots, being on vacation, and trying to get out to exercise in this recent extreme cold weather.

I am not keen to start taking BP medication.  But with a family history of high BP, and me potentially being pregnant, my doctor has started me on a BP meds called Metholdopa.  This medication is safe for pregnancy, and is in fact used by pregnant women to control high BP.  At this point, it is more important to manage my BP as having high BP during pregnancy can lead to complications such as preecampsia, low birth rate and stillbirth.

I will have a follow up appointment with my doctor in about 3 weeks.  By then, I will would have had my transfer, and will know if I am pregnant.  It is not the way I was hoping to start off 2014, but I will do what is best for my body and my future baby (babies?!).

Surgery's A Go

Went to see Dr. B today, my gynecologist that did my last 2 hysteroscopies to remove my polyps.  First I saw the ultrasound technician, Mark.  My local clinic sent the ultrasound report with a description of the polyp and a copy of the ultrasound image, but the image was just a mess.  You couldn't see anything but a bunch of black splotches.  They probably just faxed the report over and you know how faxes can be.  Fortunately I brought my copy of the report that the clinic sent me and it was better.  There was also no indication of what the size of the polyp was on the report.  Again, luckily I asked about it when I called the clinic last time (it was 6mm x 6mm x 4mm).

Not that it really mattered since Mark was doing the ultrasound again, and that would be the "formal" report for Dr. B.  When Mark saw the report I brought with me, right away he could see the polyp.  I was kind of blown away because there was no way I could have picked anything out of those images.  Well, he is the one with the trained eye!

We proceeded with the ultrasound and right away, he identified the polyp.  It is in the middle of the uterine cavity, measuring at 7mm x 5mm.  It seems like it had grown a tiny bit in 13 days, though Mark wasn't concerned.  He said it was the size of a Green Giant pea, squeezed so it was a little elongated.  He made sure to note that it was the Green Giant pea, as the are a little bigger than the other types (he's kinda funny like that).

Mark asked why we needed to remove the polyp.  I started giving an explanation and then realized it was a rhetorical question.  Doh!  That made me feel kinda silly.  Anyway, he explained we needed to remove the polyp because it can act like an IUD (intrauterine device, for birth control) in the uterus.  It can irritate the uterus, prevent pregnancies and cause miscarriages.  So, Mark confirmed that I have a polyp that needs to be removed "so that we can get you pregnant!".  His words.  He also noticed that my right ovary sits behind and under my uterus, an odd location.  This is not a surprise to me I already knew this.  We had issues accessing my right ovary during one of my past IVFs.  He also thought I am going ovulate on my left ovary in the next few days.  Is that even possible, since I was on Lu.pron and birth control?

Next, I saw Dr. B.  Since this is going to be my 3rd hysteroscopy, it was a quick appointment.  I told him how my September was cancelled, and how we needed to get this polyp removed in October so I can have a November transfer.  He listened to my heart and breathing to make sure I was healthy and walked me down to his scheduler.  I also explained that it needed to be done before I  started Es.trace for the transfer, but I didn't know when it would be since NEDC would not be able to give me the protocol till later this week, or next.  He gave me the scheduler's business card and I am to call her once I hear back from NEDC with my protocol and the exact timing the surgery needs to be done.

The only complication is Dr. B is going to be gone for a week on a missions trip overseas between October 19th and 25th.  So that might be a problem.  Plus his surgery schedule is getting pretty full.  But he assured me we would work something out.  He usually only does surgeries on Tuesday and Thursdays, but if he had to, he would do the surgery on an evening or even a Saturday.  You gotta love this guy!

So I'm gonna have to bug Katie, the NEDC nurse to see if I can get the protocol as soon as possible!

So for now, my surgery's a go, though I don't know exactly when yet.

I'll leave you with an image of my ultrasound from today.  My polyp is white bean shaped thing between the 2 white arrows.   It seems pretty large to me, but it's actually only 7mm x 5mm.

Ultrasound Appointment and Six Flags

I have my ultrasound and bloodwork appointment in the morning.  I will find out later in the day if my lining is thick enough and estradiol numbers are good enough for our transfer on Sunday 9/22.  Please pray this will be a go for us.

Last night someone posted in the Embryo Adoption Face.book group that there is an Asian/Caucasian couple looking for someone to adopt their ONE embryo.  Oh, it's so tempting to say I want it too!!  Usually people are not going to adopt just one embryo due to the cost.  I don't know what NEDC's policy is on finding our own embryos or if we would have to have another ODA (Open Donation Agreement), which mean additional cost, if we plan to have contact.  I guess I will check with NEDC when we are there this weekend.  Also, we will have to wait and see how this transfer goes first.  Either way, I pray that this embryo will find a home and have a chance at life.

We were able to get to Chicago this weekend.  We got to Chinatown and and had our food fix there.  Then on Saturday we spent almost the entire day at Six Flags Great America.  The weather was perfect, sunny and cool, and the crowds were not too bad.  Minnesota has a similar park called Valleyfair, but the rides cannot compare with the ones at Six Flags.  I had planned out the rides that we absolutely had to go on, and the ones we could skip altogether either because they were kiddie rides, or they were the same ones we had in Minnesota.  We were only going for the thrill rides!

Our favorites were (in order) X-Flight (no rails above or below you, but on the side instead), Raging Bull and Batman: The Ride.  We rode each of those at least twice.  The others we rode include Superman: Ultimate Flight (you ride face down, on your belly!), Giant Drop, Viper, and American Eagle.  We were worn out by the end of the day.  But we had so much fun!!  I'm such an adrenaline junkie!

I'm so glad we were able to make this trip to Six Flag for possibly our last hurrah on the thrill rides!  Hopefully after this weekend, I will not be able to go on thrill rides for a long while!

Warning to secure loose articles before the ride.  Countless lost cellphones,  sunglasses, etc.
The video below shows how the Superman ride starts off.

Off they go!  The Superman ride, where your ride face down, on your belly!

Green Light

Image from http://hyland255.blogspot.com/2012/02/big-green-light.html
I had my baseline appointment my former fertility clinic today.  It was interesting to go back to the clinic.  Not much has changed, but as usual the waiting room was busy.  It was hard not to think about the ladies and couples there, trying to imagine what part of their journey they are at.

Was the Indian couple there for their first appointment with the RE?  Is the comfortably dressed couple there for their IVF retrieval or transfer?  Is that poor husband looking very uncomfortable in his surroundings getting ready to deposit his sample?  Is the lady with a toddler there having secondary infertility?

Where is everyone in their journeys?  Just starting out and feeling really hopeful?  Or are they feeling hopeless after many failures or miscarriages?

It's hard not to put myself back in their positions and think about all the hopes that I had at the waiting room.  How many dozens of times I waited there for the staff to call my name, waiting to be probed by the ultrasound wand, to have a nurse stick a needle in me, or to make my next appointment.

I am no longer in their position, but yet also in a way, in a very similar position.  Though I will not be carrying a baby of Babe's and my genetics, we are still hopeful that we will be parents through embryo adoption.

My ultrasound was done by a nurse and an ultrasound tech, both which I did not recognize.  It had been more than 2 years since I was at the clinic last time so that's not surprising.  They were both very professional but lack the warmth of some of the other nurses I've worked with there.  Maybe because I have never worked with either of them before.  Or that I am technically not their patient anymore, but just one using some of their services.

My ultrasound session went fine.  They saw 3 small follicles on my right ovary and 4 small ones on my left.  I didn't really ask what my lining measurement was but the nurse said it was thin and looking good.  Earlier I heard the tech say "A4", so I am assuming my lining was measuring at 4mm but I'm not sure.  I asked if I would be getting a period since I had been spotting for a few weeks now.  She said she didn't know and we would just have to wait and see.

I had my blood work done by "Helga", a tech I didn't care for when I did my last IVF 2 years ago.  To be honest, I didn't think she would still be there because she was rough and her bedside manners iffy.  But it went just fine.

Anyway, Katie the nurse from NEDC called this afternoon and told me everything looks good.  She gave me the green light to start my Es.trace on Monday.

Yay!  We are on our way!

Lazy Follies

I had my date with Mr. Wandy (ultrasound) and Helga (blood work) today, day 6 of stims.

My lining was 5mm, which is good.  However, my follies are lazy.  I have 10 small follicles on each ovary. 10 small.  Small.  I would have thought by now my follicles would have been at a measurable size, especially since we double the dosage of Meno.pur.  Dang lazy follies!
I suppose the one good thing is I now have 10 follicles on each ovary instead of 8 since March 2nd.  So I grew 4 more follies in 8 days.  Yay!!  Grow follies, grow!

I will continue my regimen of 5 units of Lu.pron and 2 vials of Meno.pur in the morning, and 300IUs of Follis.tim in the evening until my next appointment on Friday.  They will decide if anymore adjustments will be needed then.

I asked Nurse Amy when she thinks my egg retrieval will be.  Most people have the HCG (trigger) shots after 9 to 12 days of stims.  At the rate of how my follicles are growing, the nurse estimates that I would need 12 days of stims.  HCG shot is 36 hours before retrieval, so I am estimating that my ER would possibly be March 18th.  We'll see.

Helga drew my blood again today.  I'm starting to think that she is the only one that will be doing all my blood draws.  Not so excited about that.  I decided to switch and have my blood drawn from my right arm instead today.  My left arm was still sore and bruised from the last couple of visits.

As soon as I told Helga I wanted my to use my right arm this time, I started to panic!  It just occurred to me that I have never used my right arm for blood draws before this, ever!  I have always been so proud of left arm as I have never had any problems with it.  I noticed that my right arm does not have a nice visible vein that pops out a little, like my left arm does.  Suddenly horror stories of people being poked multiple times in the veins unsuccessfully came to mind!  Images of black and blue arms flashed by!

Argh!!.... what was I thinking?  Of course I was too embarrassed to switch arms by then.  Fortunately, Helga had no problem with my right arm.  I noticed that it hurt more after though, since I use my right arm more.

After the appointment, I called the pharmacy to refill my Meno.pur, plus I filled the rest of my prescription needed for the rest of the cycle:  Tetracy.cline, Va.lium, Endome.trin and Vi.velle.  Total cost: $296.95.  Again, thank you insurance company!

A side note: I have been experiencing headaches in the afternoons for the last couple of days.  I think it's the double dosage of Meno.pur.

I'm praying that my follies will behave and keep growing.

Come on..... Grow follies, grow!!

AF and Toxic People

AF arrived this morning.  Today is also the 9th day of 20 units of Lu.pron in the mornings, and 5th day after my last BCP.  For some reason, I kept thinking that I would not be getting AF this time, even though the nurse specifically wrote "bleed" in my calendar on days after my last BCP.  Not sure what I was thinking.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment scheduled for and ultrasound and blood work.  I'm hoping that all goes well so I can start my Me.nopur and Follis.tim shots on Friday.

We just received our federal income taxes refund in the mail today.  It's going directly into our bank account tomorrow!

Last night, my Babe told me that he finally told his best Buddy that we have been trying for a kid for 6 years.  "Buddy" and my Babe were winter camping on Saturday with some boy scouts.  The slept outside, yes in the MN winter, and were chatting till 2 in the morning.  Buddy was telling him all the crap that he as dealing with his daughter's mother (Buddy had a daughter when he was in college, but did not marry his daughter's mother) over trying to have his daughter over the weekends.  Buddy is now married with a 2 1/2 year old daughter.  Of course they got married a few years after us, and they got pregnant about 6 months into their marriage.

Anyway, after Buddy told my Babe about all his troubles, he asked so when are you guys having kids?  Since he just poured his heart out, Babe felt bad and told him yeah, we have actually been trying for 6 years, but he didn't want to get into any details.  I have to say though that I think this is the first time Buddy has actually asked my Babe over the 7 plus years we have been married, this question.  So at I appreciate that he is not nosy, or least didn't pry!  Buddy asked if we've tried any "help".  I guess Buddy and his brother T had discussed us not having kids and had talked about different kinds of treatments we could try.  T is completing residency as a medical doctor and thinks he is a know-it-all.  Without being real specific, my Babe just said, "we are way ahead of you!".  Hopefully we won't get any more questions from Buddy or T!  I don't want to go into any details!

So now, Buddy knows that we have been TTC for a while.  I'm kind of worried that he will tell his wife, which I'm sure he will.  See, I think if she knows, she will most probably tell a friend of ours, M.  We all used to do a weekly game night where we would get together to play board games.  M is one of those people my sister would call "toxic people" (I think it was an O.prah term).  People that sucks to be around, and you feel worse after being around them.
M and her hubby got married young, at 19.  They had an "oops baby" not long after.  M is the kind of person in which everything is about her.  About how smart she is, how she is the top of the class, how the world is trying to screw her over because they won't pay her the salary she thinks she deserves right out of college (it's ridiculous!)  They had another "oops baby" a few years ago, and she complained about it her whole pregnancy.  All she talked about was how she didn't want to be pregnant, how she didn't want another baby, how miserable her pregnancy was, how the one time they didn't use birth control they'd get pregnant; all this while we have been TTC for a few years, and around guys and women there were either not married, or pregnant.  She's the kind of person that expects her husband to do everything for her and the kids.  She also expects others to watch her kids when we are at game night, and lets them do whatever they want.  Worse yet, she would not discipline her kids because they are "so perfect".  She hates it when people tell her how to raise her kids, and then thinks they people with no kids know nothing about parenting!

Ughh!  She makes my blood boil just thinking about her!

Getting back to my original point, I'm worried that Buddy or his wife will tell M about our TTC issues which I would not be surprised if they did because they are pretty good friends.  We on the other hand have been avoiding M and her family in the last couple of years.  I just know that if M found out about our TTC issues, she would have lots of mean things to say, and would just drive me crazy!  I am still avoiding them, but it's just a matter of time before we meet again.  Hopefully by then we would be pregnant.  Even then, I'm sure she will have all kinds of advice to give.  In a sick sort of way, I am hoping that M would say something one of these day, I'll get super pissed off and finally just tell her off!!

Of course I can't always come up with the best things to say at the most important time, and will probably come up with something really lame!  Sigh......
